Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred
One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Harper Lee's thoughtful story of an explosive scandal in small-town Alabama has been an American classic since it came out at the dawn of the Civil Rights era—and its message of compassion feels just as vital today. Sissy Spacek narrates Scout Finch's coming-of-age discovery of racial injustice, loss, and compassion in a clear, soothing Southern accent. Spacek’s acting talents bring to life Scout's wide-eyed honesty and her father Atticus' clear-eyed wisdom, while also emphasizing Lee's sly humor.
Customer Reviews
Good book, but left something to be desired
It started a little slowly, and the endearing was just sort of one thing after another. However the overall story telling, symbolism, representation of theme and characters are all fantastic! The reading was done exactly as well.
A true American classic
I’ve seen the movie many times and I love it. I decided to read the book since my wife had told me how great it was. I decided to listen to the audio version instead. It was captivating and I listened every chance I got and thoroughly enjoyed how it filled in so much more of the story than the movie had been able to tell. And Sissy Spacek was the perfect actor to read the audio version.
boring and soo long.
I’m forcing myself to listen to the rest of each chapter for this. I hate it and it’s boring, but it does have a great idea to it.
